Reflection: What is it and why is it useful?
Regular Reflection: occurs when light beams are reflected at the same angle. When your eyes detect the reflected beams, you can see a reflection on the surface. Diffuse Reflection: occurs when light beams reflect of many different angles. You can’t see a reflection because not all of the reflected light is directed toward your eyes.

Examples of reflection are light waves striking a mirror or echoes in which sound waves are reflected of a solid surface. When waves undergo reflection the angle the incoming waves make with the surface is equal to the angle of the reflected waves. This is the Law of Reflection and can be written as.

Reflection is the change in direction of a wavefront at an interface between two different media so that the wavefront returns into the medium from which it originated. Common examples include the reflection of light, sound and water waves.

Refraction of ripples entering shallow water. Students should see clearly the changes in direction as the ball bearing changes its speed, for example bending towards the normal when it rolls down the ramp. Point out that the apparatus does not produce an immediate change in speed, but a gradual increase as the ball bearing rolls down the ramp.
